James Bumphrey

James Bumphrey (1884 – after 1914) was an English professional footballer who played 136 games and scored 7 goals in the Football League for Birmingham.
Bumphrey was born in Morpeth, Northumberland, and played for Ashington Alliance before joining Birmingham in August 1908. A heavily built man, he was a strong tackler, though "a little wild", and headed the ball well despite being only tall.〔 He made his debut in the Second Division on 31 December 1908, playing at inside left in a 1–1 draw away to Burnley.〔Matthews, p. 155.〕 For the next couple of seasons he played sporadically, always in the forward line, until becoming a regular in the side at wing half.〔Matthews, pp. 155–58.〕 He made 143 appearances in all competitions for Birmingham in seven years, before moving back to his native north-east when the Football League suspended during the First World War.〔 Bumphrey died in Durham.〔
